LASEK is a modification of the PRK and LASIK procedures. With this technique a special solution is used to separate the thin epithelial layer from the corneal stroma. This sheet (flap) of epithelial tissue, which remains partially hinged to the cornea, is moved away from the central cornea and out of the optical zone. The exposed corneal stroma is then treated with the Excimer laser, the epithelial sheet is smoothed back into position and a special contact lens is placed on the eye for protection during a short (about 4 to 14 days) healing period. With the LASEK procedure more corneal stroma is available for reshaping than with LASIK. Consequently, this technique can be used for patients with greater refractive error or when the cornea is too thin to be treatable with LASIK.

The advantages of LASEK over PRK are reduced pain, a shortened recovery period and less risk of infection. LASEK may be a better choice than LASIK for people who require a greater amount of correction. In addition, some people who may be apprehensive about the use of a microkeratome (used to create the flap in the LASIK procedure) may be more comfortable with the LASEK technique. Vision recovery with LASEK is similar to LASIK except for the use of the temporary contact lens.
